What are the latest findings on studies of alcoholism?

The last set of facts to emerge regarding alcohol is staggering. A National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism study of more than 43,000 American adults found that more Americans develop alcoholism each year than any other mental disorder.

Over a period of one year, nearly 2% became alcoholics need treatment for alcoholism and an additional 1% showed signs of excessive consumption of alcohol regularly. The damage is estimated to exceed over 180 million dollars annually andcontributes to nearly half of all car accidents, claiming 100,000 lives.

"Alcohol can change gene expression in the brain. This is considered responsible for many of the characteristics of addiction, such as tolerance, physical dependence and cravings, and the consequences of chronic alcoholism, as neurotoxicity (brain damage), "said Dr. R. Adron Harris, director of UT Austin Waggoner Center for Research on drug and alcohol.

Like a computer virus corruptssystem, the consumption of alcohol may also tinkering with proteins and regions of the brain, leaving its mark. In his study, he found that the tissue gene 163 / 4000 of the brain (4%) were found to differ by 40% or more between alcoholics and nonalcoholics.

The genes most sensitive to change were sensitive to the white stuff called myelin. Myelin is the insulation between the brain cells information carrier, which may explain why cognitive deficit is one of the effects of alcohol.

AHow researchers are looking into drug treatment of alcoholism is to study the alcohol affects the internal workings of the brain. For example, researchers at the U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, Bethesda, Maryland recently tested twelve volunteers and compared the brain activity by magnetic resonance imaging.

The study found that consumption of alcohol is for volunteers to be able to identify images of faces of people who show fear. Theamygdala, which registers emotional reactions in the brain lit up when fearful faces were presented to volunteers sober, but after modest alcohol consumption, brain circuits threat detection were significantly blunted.

"At one end of the spectrum, less anxiety might enable us to approach a new person to a party," said Marina Wolf at the University of Medicine, Rosalind Franklin and science. "But at the other end of the spectrum, we may fail to avoid an argument or a fight," shesaid. She added that the study results compelling arguments against individuals who believe that the trend of bad decision after drinking alcohol "does not apply" to them.

The scary thing about alcoholism is that you can actually die of alcohol related withdrawal symptoms, if not properly managed. Since the excessive consumption of alcohol reduces the production of GABA neuroinhibitor, there may be an uncontrolled firing of synapses - the result of hallucinations, tremors, seizures, convulsions and heart failure. This is certainly not the case for everyone who loves the book a few drinks from time to time, but for every day drinking binge heavy substance abuse treatment careful monitoring is essential.

The Dry Drunk

A dry drunk is someone who demonstrates alcoholic behavior and thought, but did not really have any alcohol. A Dry Drunk displays the same signs and symptoms as an immature alcoholic, such as denial, anger, resentment and emotional and spiritual. In fact, there are many dry drunks in rooms in twelve steps. They went to Alcoholics Anonymous for years but still live a life unmanageable in their struggle through each day without a drink.

Unfortunately, a drunkard drystill not sober, at least not in the spiritual sense of being conscious and mentally at peace with himself and others. He still aspires to alcohol in a social sense because alcohol was his best friend. The chances are high that a dry drunk will relapse again and again because they are not healthy spiritually, emotionally and mentally. In essence, they have difficulty managing negative emotions and issues that affect their daily lives.

The good news is drunk dry condition maybe completely eradicated from the life of a person, and they can be productive and happy people never have a sip of alcohol. I call this the total sobriety. Total sobriety is getting to the root of the alcohol problems first and then tackle the drinking problem, which is only a symptom of something greater happening in the alcoholic. We often forget the mental, emotional and spiritual of alcohol, and instead focus solely on drinking. The drink is secondarydependence.

All alcoholics need some kind of inner healing, and if they know or not is another matter. An alcoholic drinks to feel better emotionally and mentally. This course is part of the problem which gives the constraint of alcoholic drink. Intense emotions such as anxiety, fear, panic, mistrust and insecurity are some of the most common signs that the alcoholic thinks he needs another drink. A drunk dry do not use alcohol to treather feelings, so they suffer needlessly every day of their lives.

If the drinker drank dry so they will not have to suffer? Of course not. They should focus on healing the inner demons in their retreat from their old life (sin, emotions, pride, selfishness, addictions, past) to God. Unfortunately, many dry drunks eventually find another addiction to overcome, which removes once more their emotions and prevents them from seeking God for their life's challenges.

WhyDry drunk still not happy and at peace with himself? Why some alcoholics find it difficult to come to total abstinence? They do not go to the root of the problem of alcohol and they do not go to God for inner healing, they desperately need. God is our source - period! What is so hard about believing that? God is what makes a person whole in body, mind and soul, for he is our source!

Total abstinence is a healthy body, mind and soul. Without all three componentssobriety to come to light for the alcoholic, he or she will almost always want alcohol and live in an unmanageable state, we lived to drink, drink and get there.

Signs and symptoms of panic disorder Anxiety - Know What To Look For

There are moments in our lives when we will all suffer from anxiety. Or, have some concerns, does not hurt anyone. But if you suffer from anxiety for many, now that may be a different story and can be a serious problem. When you have a lot of anxiety can sometimes interfere with your ability to function normally in everyday situations. For many anxiety can also have serious consequences on the body too. So stressed and feeling a sense of anxiety are allpart of life.

Are you suffering from stress or anxiety

Living in today's society can be very hard. Our demands at work and in the business world with parenting may be sufficient to drive a person over the nuts. But there is a big difference between being stressed and suffering from clinical anxiety.

There are times when our stress will further this advantage and turn into anxiety. Knowing some of the warning signs can mean the difference between aperson hopelessly ensnare serious and what may be relatively normal with a certain treatment.

What is the difference between stress and anxiety

If someone is really suffering from an anxiety problem, they tend to know a lot of psychological symptoms and physical symptoms. Some of them are:

palpitations

sweating

trembling hands

sweaty palms

There are also a lot of psychological symptoms that will go with that. But what is really happening, the person will tend to avoid things. Really the difference between an anxiety disorder is that your normal operation will be affected by anxiety disorder. As opposed to when you feel a little stressed and you will simply continue to grow through the problem.

Panic attacks

We must understand that a person may have an anxiety disorder and really not having panic attacks. And a person can have panic attacks and do not have anyAnxiety disorder. Now the point of this is if you are a person who makes frequent panic attacks that are definitely considered as signs and symptoms of anxiety disorder.

A panic attack can actually be characterized by a person who is having a short shallow breathing. What happens is you get too much oxygen in their body and begin to experience something that makes them feel a little woozy. They will feel that the walls began to close in on them, thatthere is not enough air to breathe, and they will die at any moment. What happens then is that the person will start to avoid situations that make them feel that way.

What to avoid people when they suffer from an anxiety disorder

Sometimes, even kids in high school can begin developing the escape it. He could start with a paper to be the cause of anxiety. They will begin to put off starting the paper, they willprocrastinate on this.

This can also happen at work. Whether a person has a big meeting up, and the big day comes and they call in sick leave in the morning of the meeting. It may also be that a person may be apprehensive when they want to go and talk to the boss to give them higher or on certain holidays.

What to look for

Some of the things a spouse or possibly a family member might start looking for a person who begins to suffer from anxiety and panicdisorder could be the following:

a person is removed

the person is a little worried

they are much more approximate

complaining of psychological problems such as, perhaps, they do not feel well, or they are more tired than usual

an inability to control stress

People who suffer from this inability to cope with stress and anxiety will try to reduce the level but they will be unsuccessful. The difficult question is that it may not be a definite linebetween what the stress is normal and what is pathological anxiety? But if you start having trouble with this, you probably can not control it more.

Long-term effect on the body anxiety

Stress, anxiety, panic attacks can all wreak havoc on the body. More problems of medico-psychological problems may be created. Some of them are:

ulcers

the irritable bowel syndrome or IBS

Migraines

Chronicbackache

agitation

insomnia

A general feeling of fatigue

For most people generally find some use medical explanation. They think there is something wrong with them. They have problems with their heart or have a certain type of lung problem. There are many other symptoms that people will think because they feel they have a health problem.

Things you should do to control anxiety

One thing we know it is reallystressful or less may be, it's our job. If you feel anxious, it would be desirable to take the brief time off. Another thing you should do is take your lunch break definitively. Try taking a walk. What you do is try to separate you from your worries at work.

These things above should not be long periods of time. You just give yourself a chance to break the routine a little, a bit like out of the moment. What you want to do is simply moveaway from the stress and relax a little.

Alcohol: The most used and abused drug by adolescents

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, June 1997, alcohol is the leading cause of death among adolescents. Teenage drinking contributes to the high rate of car accidents among teenagers, traumatic injuries, suicide and rape. Alcohol is by far the most used and abused drugs among teens today in America. According to a national survey, nearly one third (31.5%) of all high school students reported hazardous drinking five or more drinks in onesetting.

Twenty million Americans are alcoholics, and children of these alcoholics are likely to inherit the disease. Over 40% of those who begin drinking at age fourteen or younger become alcoholic. The problem I see is lack of knowledge about alcoholism is a hereditary disease. Children of alcoholics are four times more likely than other children to become alcoholics, according to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.

Teens, ifyou have a mother, father or grandparent with the disease, then you might be likely to become alcoholic. This is not a good idea to have even one drink. It's like playing Russian roulette. Abstinence is the best strategy against defying the odds of being another statistic of death in the mechanics of alcoholism.

I come from an alcoholic medium, and I know first hand the destructive effects of what alcohol can do. I had no way of knowing that I would become an alcoholic, evenAlthough my grandfather was an alcoholic. I did not know that at the age of seventeen, while drunk, I'd be driving my best friend and my car rolled three times into a telephone pole. Fortunately for me, I was not hurt, but my friend has back problems for life. And I do not know I'd probably pass on the gene inherited from one of my three son. If I had known this, perhaps, just maybe, I never had that first drink.

I can not tell you in aArticle short all the pain and suffering that I put my mother through when I was drinking in adolescence, or the anguish I put my husband through, but I can tell you this, I was completely freed and forgiven by the love and grace of salvation of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I alcohol free for over fourteen years!

Teens please do not let yourself be trapped in the depths of this insidious disease: the place to learn about the sensitivity of alcoholismwhich is transmitted from one generation to another. The abstinence education is the best way and most effective way of preventing the use and abuse of alcohol.

Just one glass of alcohol if you are a carrier of the gene of a parent is a glass too! And even if you're not likely to become alcoholics, alcohol is very dangerous and can make you do stupid things that you normally would not do. Abstinence is the best policy.

Reliability of Alcohol Tests

The reliability testing of alcoholism are often questioned. There are several tests administered to people suspected of having too much to drink. The reliability of several trials had been successfully challenged in court.

The challenges of reliability occurs when the test used is considered subjective or indirect. The results of breathalyzer tests are often challenged based on the analyzer an indirect measure of the level of alcohol in the blood of someone. The analyzer is essentially establishing a BAC of air breathed by the individual tested. The problem is that this is not a controlled environment. There are too many variables at hand to ensure reliability.

The first variable is the air itself. The analyzer is a vacuum. So there seems to be entering the analyzer is not the individual. Some judges have determined that sufficient to consider that the test is unreliable because the measure can notpossibly be accurate. The test will read a false positive if smoke is another alcohol based nearby. Cologne and the mouth cause inaccurate readings due to dilute alcohol in their ingredients.

Another critical variable is the temperature. In addition to the environmental temperature, body temperature of the individual tested can affect the results. The temperature of the machine also affects the reading. Reliability issues may arise depending on who isadminister the test. If this person is not trained properly or simply did not administer the test properly, the result may be a misreading. However, many courts continue to rely solely on technology breathalyzer machine.

Tests of sobriety seem more reliable. In fact, the variables at play here are even more subjective. All can not walk straight, sober or not. If a person has a balance disorder, it may not be able to walk straight. Policeofficers and other testers have no way of knowing if someone has a physical or medical condition that impacts negatively on their sobriety test.

The reliability of tests to measure alcohol content blood alcohol continues to be questioned. Convictions have been canceled in some courts. While we must protect the public against people who are drunk and potentially dangerous to themselves or others, we must also protect these same people for fines and prison abusetime due to alcohol tests unreliable.

Is there a medication for alcoholism?

The FDA approved the drug treatment of alcoholism and alcohol cravings. They are disulfiram (Antabuse), naltrexone (Revia and Depade), and acamprosate (Campral). These drug treatments on prescription only, and are prescribed to those who have stopped drinking and trying to maintain their abstinence.

These drugs should be eliminated, someone pulls the satisfaction of drinking, or cause a serious reaction to imbibe. Although drug treatments have been available forsome time in the United States, they have never been as popular as they are in Europe. Using long-term follow-up tests have shown high rates of abstinence in chronic alcoholics.

None of these medicines is effective if the alcoholic will not stop, however. Alcoholism, like any other serious illness, usually requires a network to aid in the recovery which may include prescription drugs. Alcohol can cause pancreatitis or liver disease varied. These can be treated withdrugs and, although other different.

For the alcoholic who has decided to stop drinking and wants drugs as part of a support system, a trip to a doctor is in order. vitamins may be prescribed and medication. Consumption of alcohol deprives the body of nutrients and the patient feels better when these deficiencies are resolved.

The first drug to be approved for the treatment of alcoholism was Disulfiram. More commonly known as Antabuse, it is the "stick"approach of abstinence as the "carrot" approach. Antabuse, taken daily in pill form, acts as a deterrent to further drinking.

Someone who takes Antabuse drinks alcohol may experience sweating, nausea, vomiting or dizziness. More severe reactions can include respiratory depression, heart failure and even death. Antabuse should not be taken lightly.

Another drug, naltrexone, is sold under the brand names Revia and Depade. An extended-release form of the drug is also sold asVivitrol. The drug works by reducing cravings that alcoholics often suffer when they stop drinking. Naltrexone is usually taken in pill form, although there is a form approved by injection and an implant shape that has not yet been approved.

The third drug, acamprosate, was recently approved by the FDA in 2004. It is known under the trade name Campral. It reduces the physical symptoms that many people feel when they stop drinking. Sweating, loss of sleep and anxiety are all commonside effects of sudden abstinence.

Campral is usually taken three times a day, so it needs a little more commitment from patients than the other two drugs. However, it has fewer side effects and lighter. Diarrhea, sweating, nausea and dry mouth were reported. In more severe reactions, chest pain, anxiety or suicidal thoughts occurred. Obviously, none of these will be reported to your doctor.

Drug treatment for alcoholism can nowmitigate a much wider range of symptoms in the past. Medicines, medical care and support groups can all contribute to the alcoholic who has had enough of being sick and is ready to move toward recovery and health.

Abstinence from drug addiction and alcoholism - Am I cured?

For those in drug recovery and alcohol dependency, of course that the sun will rise tomorrow, this thought will arise sooner or later: "I have not had a drink or a drug at a time, I I wonder if I am cured? ".

It is the desire of many alcoholics or addicts to be able to use again as "normal people". But is this possible?

Given this state of mind, the user will attempt to establish the square in round holes, searching for any justification that will again allow use. On the surface, the idea of being cured of addiction because a person has not had a drink or drug in a while seems logical. There is a fatal flaw in the concept.

The flaw in this reasoning is that it is simply time away from the use that is the cure. Here is an analogy with this logic: if a person is allergic to wheat and has really bad reactions, they are far from consumption of wheat products. Why would they assume that after a week, month or year, they could eat wheat products withimpunity?

There is a body of evidence showing that the drug or alcoholic brain and the body has different reactions to drugs and alcohol than non-addicts. Time away from use is not a factor, the biology is. With the improved technology of brain imaging, we can now see the irrefutable evidence of irreversible changes in the brain due to addiction.

If you look at the old adage "Once you cross the line, you can never go back" in terms of being unableto reverse the biological changes, there is no "cure". Every year or two, he seems eager advertisements in the press about a "magic pill" that will return safe to use. It simply has not happened.

The topic of controlled drinking has been a hot few years ago. The evidence over time has shown overwhelmingly that it simply does not for people who are addicted. Anecdotally, in my career as an addiction therapist, I have never had a patient call me up and say he hadreturned to help, had no other bad consequences, relations are good, life is good. Ever.

Instead of thinking in terms of cure, it is more productive to think in terms of stopping the problem. There are, of course, a solution to keeping the disease of addiction in a permanent state of remission, and that abstinence is underway.

The key is to learn to remain in a state of continuous abstinence. There is a great free resource to help you.

What everyone should know about alcoholism Recovery

Alcoholism is one of the most common addictions in the world today. Once the alcoholic has identified himself as such, then it is time they seek help for their addiction. In many cases, the alcoholic family and friends have to take the first step to getting the addict in a recovery situation. Sometimes an intervention is staged, where alcohol is given an ultimatum: go to rehabilitation or out of our lives. Other times, speaking simply concernedthe alcoholic can bounce back to reality and make them understand that their addiction has progressed to an illness and it affects others.

Once an alcoholic is willing to seek help for his addiction, he or she must choose how to stop drinking. One of the most popular ways to rehabilitate alcoholic is the implementation of detoxification. Detox is going "cold turkey" is when an alcoholic abruptly stops drinking alcohol. In addition, this approach of cold turkey is used incollaboration with various drugs that are used to minimize withdrawal symptoms. Detox is happening in a rehabilitation center, that was a detox may be the most effective, as rehabilitation centers are fully stocked with medicines and staff necessary to help an addict get off the medicine.

Detox can occur several different ways, depending on the degree of this dependence in alcoholics. Drug treatment centers addiction to help treat the physical effects of prolongedalcohol, but it does not address the disease itself, alcohol. In a treatment center for addiction, detoxification usually takes about a week to complete, after which the patient will not experience symptoms extreme physical withdrawal. After a patient is finished with detoxification, relapse may occur, especially if the alcoholic does not receive drug treatment later.
Treatment also that many alcoholics who participate in rehabilitation centers and elsewhere is group therapy orpsychotherapy to help fight mental illness that often accompanies alcohol rehabilitation. Relapse Symptoms - the importance of these 7 Hidden Danger Signs of Drug and Alcohol Relapse?

Relapse is a process, and there are symptoms of relapse and many warning signs that precede the collection makes a drink or a drug.

The relapse process ends when one actually starts to drink or take drugs again, at this point, it becomes an episode to help. Relapse prevention focuses on thoughts, emotions and behaviors that occur before an episode of use. Any of these seven themes unnoticed and unheeded, can lead to relapse destructive.

1. Return OfDenial.

In entering recovery we had to face denial and work through it. It meant acknowledging finally may have a problem with drugs or alcohol existed, or was out of control. Somehow we got to solve the case. When denial returns, sneaky thoughts come in. The idea that it was not really so bad in May became attractive. Blaming anything of substance except May come into play ideas as alcohol is not the problem, my job was, "or" The relationship wasmake myself useful, and we're better now, if one or two could not hurt.

2. Cessation of therapy or support groups.

There are many studies that support the idea that the more you will have exposure to treatment, the better the results. Numerous studies show that you are less likely to relapse with a strong support network. A question I ask all patients who return to treatment after relapse is if they followed the recommendations of continuous care. In the vastmajority of cases the answer is no.

3. Frustration

The most common frustration is that things are not moving along fast enough. Many impose a realistic deadline for themselves and those around them to change for the better. "When will I be happy?" Or "When will it finally be over with?

4. Quick to anger and resentment Forming

Much time and frustration turn to anger and resentment. One waywhich form the frustration is when one believes there is not enough happening, and it happens too slowly. Anger and resentment have a direct relation to our expectations. If people and things behave the way we think they should anger and resentment is generated.

5. Tendency to solitude and isolation

I think it is quite true that dependence is growing and developing in isolation and loneliness, and healing occurs in the establishment and maintenanceconnections. Without progress in recovering alcoholic and drug addict or use is what we do. Recovery is best done with the help of others.

6. Self-pity

Common themes of self-pity and resentment are questions about why other people can use and we can not. This is not fair. There is an old saying, "Poor me, poor me, to take another drink. I used to climb on the pity pot when I realized I had to do all this work on the feelings and emotions, honesty, and remain inthe present moment, just for a chance to be 'normal'. Heck, normal people were all natural, they do not have to work on him like their lives depended on it.

7. Impulsive and Compulsive Behavior

Moderation and accountability, I hate it. When we're on the road to relapse, self-control and discipline can slip by the wayside. It usually starts with small gaps in the promise that you have done for you. This lack of monitoring may lead to a denial, dishonesty anda return to a behavior out of control. It is dangerous to give the "I want what I want when I want 'mentality.

These are just a few warning signs of many identifiable symptoms of relapse. There are many more, you should be aware of protecting your recovery.

What are the effects of alcoholism in a family?

Alcoholism is a terrible debilitating disease that affects people of all ages and all races and genders. Alcoholics come in all shapes, sizes and professions too. Doctors, lawyers, Ship captains, Commercial Airline Pilots, and almost any other occupation you can imagine have alcoholics in their midst. But what makes them susceptible to alcohol? Why are they addicted to it in the first place? Good question. See in this a little further.

Researcherfocused on alcohol from many different angles over the years and although there is no definitive answer to this problem, most believe that it comes from our lineage. Somewhere in our family, at some point, there has been an alcoholic or any number of alcoholics in the family. This can be on both sides of your family or a single side. It could even be a parent, which is very common. Wherever it came from, you must learn to Ahold's problems and put the bottle beforedisease progresses.

Some people are born with an acquired taste for alcoholic beverages. Some even say that "Crave" it. One thing is certain and that they need to decline before the end of their life at an early age. You see, alcohol is in different stages. One day you may be pending after a few beers with your friends and the worst may happen is that you wake with a hangover or do something stupid while you were drunk, you know The old lampshaderoutine head? But as you continue to evolve over time, your body and your brain starts to change. You actually become a different person. The electrons in your brain starts firing in a different scheme and you begin to go through a personality change. For some people, it is potentially dangerous because they may become violent, depression or psychosis. If they were already in crisis or have suffered from depression before starting to drink heavily, then they become much worse.

Alcohol is anatural "depressant" and remit a large quantity in a person already suffering from depression is also potentially dangerous. This person may become suicidal or things may be seemingly desperate for them and they find themselves in the depths of despair. Also, a person who continues to drink regularly in the thirties May cause permanent damage to their sexual organs. This can eventually cause people to become incapable of having an erection.

Alcoholics can also sufferhyperglycemia (a low concentration of sugar), to become diabetic, suffers from atrophy of limbs due to muscle loss and eventually develop cirrhosis of the liver and die at an early age. Unfortunately, this happens too often and there is no cure for cirrhosis. Once the liver is damaged, it never heal, even if the person stops drinking.

If you feel you have a drinking problem, please do not hesitate to do something. Confide in a friend, family member or your doctor. It takestime to recover from this disease and, although you'll still have it, you'll be able to live productive lives well, if you just put the bottle and pick up the phone. God bless you and good luck!
