What Signs to Look For in Teen Drug Abuse

Teen treatment centers have made it a priority to warn adults, friends and concerned well-wishers of the teen who is addicted to drugs about the various signs and hints that are identifiable with drug abuse. We already know about the physical and mental symptoms of drug abuse; some of them being droopy eyes, red hues in the whites of the eyes, slurred speech, inability to sleep, paranoia, irregular heart-beats etc. But now let us look at the outward signs that hint towards drug abuse.

1. Behavioral signs: Some of the behavioral signs are contradictory set of personality traits shown by the individual. For instance, the teen may become too introvert or too brash that he or she really was. Then things like staying alone in his/her room for hours, taking way too much time in the toilet. Becoming a recluse, telling lies, getting moody and angry, and using abusive language are some of the signs that can be possibly related to drug abuse.

2. Drug paraphernalia: You may find drug paraphernalia like syringes, blades, rolling papers, pipes, matches, needles, pill bottles, syringes and other things that may put questions in your mind. Nicotine users may just leave cigarette butts and ash trays in certain places of the room. Those who inject drugs may just wear long-sleeved shirts to conceal the marks. Look out for such paraphernalia in your child's room, in the hidden crevices and pockets of drawers, cupboard and behind the toilet sink.

3. Change in group of friends: Every teen usually has a group that he or she keeps to. But if there is a change in the group of friends, you can be sure that there is something wrong happening in his life. You can also ask one of his friends from the group about why your son is not hanging around with them these days.

4. Thefts happening inside the house: You may notice strange things happening in the house like things disappearing and money being stolen or lost. It is possible that your teen is selling things off secretly or stealing money to arrange for money to buy drugs since they are expensive.

As a parent, you cannot take just one of the above symptoms or signs in isolation, according to teen treatment centers. You have to do your investigation also and find out a sum of some of the above factors that lead you to conclusive believe that your son or daughter is taking drugs. Do not take the matter of drug addiction lightly and do not confront your child harshly. You have to act sensibly and at the same time make sure that your child is cured off his addiction permanently.

Of course, it is going to be hard on you but you should sit with your child and tell him or her lovingly but firmly that drugs do nothing but harm the body. If you find out that your teen has gone far into drug addiction and even has health issues, it is better to take him to a teen treatment center.
