An intervention takes place only when all attempts to send the person suffering from alcohol abuse to a rehab center have failed and he is unwilling to come to terms with his condition. The process starts with a simple phone call by a family member or friend of the sufferer to a phone consultant, employed by an intervention center.
On the phone, an informal discussion takes place regarding the situation, before the call is transferred to an alcohol intervention specialist. Subsequently, a meeting is organized between the specialist and the people who are close to the abusive drinker. It's a brainstorming session, where an in-depth analysis of the existing circumstances takes place. The specialists are professionally trained to make the family members comfortable, which would enable them to confide all their fears and anxieties to him. The specialist, after assessing the state of affairs, recommends rehab centers and various alcohol treatment programs available, which best suit their requirements. He also advises them on how to behave around the drinker, and how to react to situations that seem to be getting out of hand.
Then the actual intervention takes place. The specialist acts as an intermediary between the drinker and his family. The situation needs to be handled with delicacy, keeping in mind that the drinker refuses to accept the fact that anything is wrong with him. Once he has been pacified and agrees to do what is told to him, the specialist escorts him to the selected rehab center. Intervention can be a tiring experience, but it has a high rate of success.
Crisis intervention is adopted as a last resort, when everything else fails. It is slightly different from a normal intervention as it is offered when the abusive drinker engages in self-destructive or criminal activities or starts exhibiting suicidal tendencies.
