A recent Omaha World Herald article revealed that In 2009, Representatives, Lee Terry, Jeff Fortenberry and Adrian Smith joined Senator Ben Nelson in seeking earmarks for Nebraska interests. The four made 91 earmark requests, which overlap because requests often are made by more than one member. This year, Nelson is the state's only delegation member seeking earmarks for Nebraska, with 51 requests. Senator Mike Johanns has not requested earmarks in the Senate.
Examples: $11 million to Offut Air Force Base for construction of new security gates.
$60.6 million University of Nebraska agriculture research facility
$500,00 City of Alliance renovation of a commercial area
$565,000 Visiting Nurses Assoc. home visitations for at-risk new mothers.
The list continues to include projects that should, in most cases, have been financed through approved budget items in various departments. Financing software development for unmanned aircraft and building security gates at Offut Air Base are just two questionable items. Senator Nelson's earmarks total $183 million dollars. I must say that Senator Nelson is either tone deaf, politically suicidal or just dense. Our country is broke and Ben Nelson is still buying our votes with our money. However, there is a chance that he may be buying votes for a challenger.
The shame of it is that Senator Ben Nelson is not the only lawmaker who insists in poking their constituents in their eyes with a stick. Reporting for work on Tuesday in time for their Tuesday afternoon votes and spending Wednesday afternoon planning their trip home Thursday which is a typical day to two at the office for our leaders. In their off duty time they spend millions of dollars on questionable overseas trips claiming to spend quality time at home visiting with their constituents who consist of movers and shakers and money and power.
We probably should not expect representation from leadership where too many members are cheating on their taxes, cheating on their wives, cheating on their constituents, handcuffed by lobbyists and are beholding to special interest groups. Within a few days after Obama's presidential inauguration Vice President Biden attended a rather large union meeting. As members were greeting him he was overheard to say, "you gotta dance with the ones who brung you" he said it all. We have just arrived at what our forefathers ran away from, taxation without representation.
Voters have the power to make change. Every politician should understand that they are voted into office one term at a time. Voters have the power to put them in office and voters have the power to take them out of office.Voters should pay particular attention to whom they are voting for when they go in the voting booth this coming November.
