How to Abstain From Alcoholism

The word "alcoholism" refers to a disease known as alcohol dependence syndrome. Alcohol problems arise at different levels of severity, from mild and frustrating to life-threatening. In this stage a person known as 'alcohol dependent'.

Alcoholism can be overcome through many treatment programmes and approaches, helping those who are determined to get help - but no medical treatment is available. Withdrawal symptoms include an increased tolerance to alcohol. Determination plays a key role in this regard because alcoholics who are compelled by social pressure or forced to quit by circumstances rarely succeed in the long run. Remember that changing behaviour, especially becoming an abstainer, is very difficult. Be thoughtful and tolerant, but don't accept any responsibility or guilt for the behaviour of another person.

Though there are many preventive acts for giving up from alcohol, heavy drinkers who make a decision to quit drinking should seek medical aid first. Detoxification treatment should be taken, which includes abstinence from alcohol in a controlled environment and close monitoring of vital signs and any withdrawal symptoms.

A person can abstain from alcoholism by attending a drug rehabilitation programme. It is important for many reasons, such as the failure to control drinking, alienating friends and family, legal problems, severe depression and general unhappiness due to excessive drug or alcohol use. A person enters this programme in order to treat a drug or alcohol addiction problem. Alcoholism can be abstained through persistent psychotherapy and education. In this way individuals can become able to withdraw drinking and thus, lead to a dynamic and drug free life.

Cutting down on drinking can be difficult at times. Support of family and friends can be helpful in attaining the goal. If a person has a trouble in cutting down, he can go for doctor's help as medications are available to help make it easier.

In order to quit drinking, you should keep a diary of your drinking. It should be written down every time you drink for three or four weeks. This will help you in abstaining, or at least reducing, when, where, and how much you drink. In this way, you will get to know the difference between your desired goal and the amount you drink. Also, keep only a small amount of alcohol, or even no alcohol, at home. This will help reduce temptation.

Learn to say 'no'. You don't have to take a drink just because it's offered to you. Stay away from people who give you a hard time about not drinking as much as they do. Saying 'no' gets easier the more you do it. Practice refusing drinks politely. Also, stay away from people who want you to drink more than you want to. Watch out for people, times, places or situations that encourage you to drink too much. Avoid temptations!

When you drink, sip your drink slowly. Drink for taste rather than effect. Don't drink on an empty stomach. Reduce the amount of alcohol consumption per hour. Eat food or snacks while drinking. After taking a drink, have a soda, water, or fresh juice etc. High protein and high fat foods like cheese and nuts are particularly good at keeping your blood alcohol content low. Quit unhealthy habit of drinking alcohol instead, you can take lemonade or other fresh juices and stay healthy!
