Most people associate alcoholism with liver damage. However, there are many more side effects, many of which are even more severe and life threatening. Recent statistics show that there are millions of active alcoholics - many of which have perfected the art of hiding alcohol problems.
One very serious side effect of alcoholism is dementia. Dementia is a condition that impacts the brain nervous system of the body, and is more commonly associated with Alzheimer's disease or the natural aging process. However, alcoholism has been shown to be a strong contributor to dementia, especially in alcoholics who are would not be considered of an advanced age.
Some of the classic signs of dementia, especially alcohol related dementia, include loss of memory, struggle in completing tasks that are well known or very simple to do, and increased difficult in speaking and using language appropriately. While these are all signs of alcoholism effects and dementia, there is one warning sign that is an almost fool proof signal of an alcoholism problem and dementia onset: personality changes.
As alcoholism affects the brain and thus the memory and basic function of the impaired person, severe personality changes will become very evident to those who know the person. A once happy or carefree individual will start to show classic signs of depression and even anger. The reason is that the brain memory is no longer functioning properly, and thus the person finds themselves in "unfamiliar" surroundings. This change in perceived surroundings can cause paranoia and thus, mood swings and depression.
There are many other alcoholism warning signs, and alcoholism effects on the human body. Dementia, however, is a dangerous condition that can come about with serious consequences. It is known, however, that it potentially takes many years of alcohol abuse to render the brain damage necessary to trigger a true state of dementia. Many experts feel that in order to dementia to be fully onset, years of daily alcohol abuse would have to occur.
