Alcohol addiction is a devastating form of substance abuse that has the potential to harm not only the individual suffering from it, but the people that are around the person that suffers from the disease. This form of addiction starts with the abuse of alcohol. Alcohol abuse occurs when a person drinks this substance in a manner that is considered to be unhealthy and even potentially dangerous. As the cycle of abuse progresses, an individual develops dependence to the substance. This is commonly referred to as "alcoholism", but many refer to it as "alcohol addiction" as well.
Signs of Alcoholism - There are many symptoms that may be displayed when an individual suffers from alcohol addiction. These may include any or all of the following:
* The individual that has become dependent on alcohol may find that they consistently crave products that contain alcohol. In some cases, a sheer compulsion to consume this substance is developed.
* Those that have abused alcohol to the point of addiction typically find that they must drink larger amounts to achieve the same state of mind or "high" from the substance.
* Over time, the individual suffering from alcohol addiction will actually find that they become less limited in their ability to control the amount that they consume.
* If a person is addicted to this substance, and are unable to drink for an extended period of time, withdrawal symptoms are commonly experienced. It is not unusual for body tremors or shaking to be experienced, high levels of anxiety that may include panic attacks, feelings of nausea and possibly vomiting, and even sweating.
* If a person who is addicted fails to consume this substance, severe mood swings may be experienced. A person may become extremely irritable, experience severe degrees of depression, and similar issues.
Complications - There are many complications that may arise as a result of alcohol addiction. Many medical providers have even identified this form of substance abuse as "terminal". This stems from the fact that alcohol can have a detrimental effect on the body. For example, certain types of potentially fatal Cancers may be experienced.
The organs and areas of the body that may be affected by these devastating Cancers include the liver, kidneys, and the area of the rectum, the colon, and even the esophagus as well as the larynx. Cancer may develop in other areas of the body as well. It depends on the amount of alcohol abused regularly and the individual's state of health.
In addition to various types of cancers, many individuals suffer from health complications such as cirrhosis in the liver, suppressed immunity and possibly even damage to the nerves and the brain. Alcoholics typically find that they suffer from more injuries than people who are not dependent on alcohol. These accidents typically occur while working or while driving or operating other types of heavy machinery. Relationship complications, social problems, and financial challenges are also typical when it comes to the life of the person that suffers from alcohol addiction. Individuals that suffer from this form of addiction typically require medical assistance in order to successfully overcome the challenges that they are faced with.
